The Best American Poetry, 1989

An anthology of contemporary poets presents works that reflect the diversity in American poetry The second installment of this yearly anthology lives up to the high standards of the first ( LJ 1/89). Editor Hall emphasizes variety along with quality, and the eclecticism of his selections makes this collection a constant surprise and delight. A number of the poets one would expect are included--Snodgrass, Bly, Wilbur, Creeley, and Merrill, among others--as well as poets with more recently established reputations such as Robert Pinsky, Mary Oliver, Sharon Olds, and David St. John. Hall is partial to longer narrative poems and includes several, with works by Alan Williamson and Robert McDowell among the more notable (along with Hall's own "History").
