He won the Gran Premio de Honor da Sociedad Argentina de Escritores, the Cervantes Award, and the Légion d’Honneur da França. He also worked as a journalist and translator. He was a colleague and collaborator with his fellow countryman Jorge Luis Borges, with whom he wrote six books.
