In dark, musty surroundings, Nelly Lowell, barely sixteen, is discovered dead. Although ruled an accident, Emily White, journalist for the Daily Whaler, believes that Nelly was murdered. Motivated by the unsolved murder of still another girl, Judy Babbitt, a year earlier, young Emily is compelled to probe the demise of both victims. Her plans are postponed when she is dispatched to Virginia on a secret undertaking for the daily newspaper. Nevertheless, death accompanies her. Unexpectedly, her clandestine assignment draws her into a myriad of conflicts, and she is confronted by Confederate authorities with false allegations and the certain threat of perpetual imprisonment.
