In Dressed to Steal, hot young designer Alicia Adams is opening a boutique in her hometown of River Heights. The press is all over the event. Later Alicia's most expensive dress is destroyed and her store is vandalized. Nancy may not be into fashion, but this is one case she's ready to size up. Carolyn Keene is the pseudonym of the authors of the Nancy Drew mystery stories and the Dana Girls mystery stories, both produced by the Stratemeyer Syndicate. In addition, the Keene pen name is credited with the Nancy Drew spin-off, River Heights and the Nancy Drew Notebooks. Rebecca Rogers has been a professional actor and performer for twenty years, specializing in improvisation with ComedySportz and period acting with several renaissance festivals across the country. She is director of the Northwest Renaissance Festival and founder of the Society for Renaissance Performers in Spokane, Washington. Nancy investigates a break-in at a fashion boutique in River Heights with the help of friends George, Bess, and Ned. Although Rebecca Rogers has a lovely lilting voice, one is at times confused as to who is speaking. Further, aspects of this production, which updates the series, can be jarring for earlier generations of readers. The new Nancy breaks into an apartment and hacks into a computer! On the package she is a young tween-ager yet Rogerss Nancy sounds older and has friends in college. Boyfriend Ned sounds slightly condescending and too sultry. The audience for this listening experience would typically be younger than its story or delivery allows. DRESSED TO STEAL lacks the wonderful campiness that makes Nancy Drew appealing to generations.
