The Maine Bicentennial Edition A Maine Guide Book. Dr. Lucius Lee Hubbard spent his vacations in the Moosehead Lake Region of Maine and the even more remote north woods. This guide not only details the wilderness lakes, pond, rivers, and mountains, it also contains historical notes, Native American legends, and tips for camping excursions. In his writing, Hubbard captures a period in time, almost 130 years ago, that is not unlike what you will find today in the woods of northern Maine. Originally published in 1893, readers will find this an interesting and historical look-back to what was, and yet what in many ways still is, unspoiled Maine forest. Whether you are planning your first visit to northern Maine, or are a frequent visitor, this book is sure to be entertaining and provide you with a few facts you may not have known. It will make a great addition to your library and belongs in every Maine camp. This Annotated Edition is updated with new material and photographs of the Maine woods. Read about Moosehead Lake, Mount Kineo, Katahdin, area legends, Maine rivers, and the Allagash Wilderness. Hubbard’s memoir, “Woods and Lakes of Maine – A Trip from Moosehead Lake to New Brunswick in a Birch-Bark Canoe," was classic north woods writing and a 2020 Annotated Edition also been released for Maine’s Bicentennial year. I've got to thank Tommy Carbone for republishing, "Hubbard's Guide to Moosehead Lake and Northern Maine ." It's an amazing book by Lucius Hubbard, first published in 1879. Hubbard really knew Maine's north woods and his book features his hikes and paddles throughout the north woods. Thankfully, our north woods hasn't changed much since Hubbard's time.I've spent time in many of the places Hubbard wrote about, and it was fascinating to learn what those places were like in the 1800s, such as all the wildlife Hubbard saw including caribou. I also appreciated all the information Tommy Carbone added to the book. And the photos will put you right there in my favorite places. I guarantee, if you've spent time in the north woods, you will love this book , but even if you haven't, you'll enjoy it, and you'll probably start planning a visit there. - George Smith - Maine's Bangor Daily News - - - - - - - - - -
