In November of 1932, the impoverished Kowalsky family lives in a rented farmhouse on the edge of the Menominee Indian reservation. After Oskar, the father, loses the lease in a drunken poker game with his landlord, he disappears. Two days later, the landlord’s dead body is found lying in the snow. With seven younger siblings and a frail mother to support, seventeen-year-old Lena wants to find her father and clear him of suspicion. She turns to Little Bear, a Menominee youth, to help her track Oskar through the reservation’s dense timberlands. When Lena’s search for her father brings threats to her life, she draws on an inner strength she never knew she had.
