About this item

The Other Nineteenth Century (Portuguese Literary and Cultural Studies) (Volume 12)

The impetus for this volume, "The Other Nineteenth Century," stems from the homonymous conference that was held at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in April 2005. Over twenty scholars from the United States and Portugal delivered papers, and expanded versions of nineteen of these studies, along with five other relevant articles, constitute the present volume of Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies . The conference itself was designed to provide a forum to discuss works, authors and themes that are usually excluded from the repertoires of Lusophone literary and cultural history, and only seldom addressed in academic venues. Indeed, as the original conference presentations and the final published articles demonstrate, behind the more "canonized" nineteenth century lies another nineteenth century that has not always been duly recognized in literary and cultural histories. KATHRYN BISHOP-SANCHEZ is an Associate Professor in Portuguese at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her study of the work of Almeida Garrett entitled Utopias desmascaradas. O mito do bom selvagem e a procura do homen natural na obra de Almeida Garrett was published by the Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda. Her publications include: "Untaming the Screw: Sex, Sewers and Obscenity in A Cidade e as Serras ." Queirosiana 12-13 (2005): 129-60; "Subjects of Confession, Objects of Desire: (Dis)engaging Constructs of Sex, Power and Sin in Eça de Queirós's O Crime do Padre Amaro ." Portuguese Studies 19 (Fall 2003): 64-79, and "Taking the Father's Place: Neo-Bovarism and Female Sexuality in Hélia Correia's O Número dos vivos ." Bulletin of Spanish Studies LXXXII, No. 6 (Fall 2005): 793-813.
