Creating Change Through Family Philanthropy explains how privilege works in our society, and how young people can use it to better society. Based on the authors’ experiences with Resource Generation, a national nonprofit working with wealthy young progressives, the book makes the case for addressing urgent social and economic needs financially. It frames controversial topics from power dynamics to grants payout in an accessible way, offering next-generation readers the tools they need to transform their funds. Drawing on over 40 interviews, this is an essential guide for both young philanthropists and anyone working with wealthy families interested in ethical giving. [A] compelling rationale and step by step guide that will transform how we DO philanthropy for social change -- Susan Ostrander, Professor of Sociology, Tufts University and Author, Money for Change: Social Movement Philanthropy at Haymarket People's Fund [A]n excellent tool to promote multigenerational dialogue, foster true partnerships, and help families look at their philanthropy in new ways. -- Susan Crites Price, Managing Director, Family Foundation Services, Council on Foundation and Author, The Giving Family: Raising Our Children to Help Others It is estimated that $41 trillion in wealth will be transferred during the next fifty years. Where will the "next generation" of philanthropists direct these growing resources? What strategies will they use? What impact will this have on the future of philanthropy? Creating Change Through Family Philanthropy is the first book to look directly at how members of the next generation are addressing these questions. Based on the program experience of Resource Generation--a national non-profit that works with young people with wealth who care about social justice--and over forty interviews, this book offers a window into young people's own ideas and concerns. What's revealed is an engaging case for shifting not only where family funds give, but how they give. This book argues that in order to address urgent social and economic needs, in order to truly incorporate the priorities of younger members, families need to question some of the most fundamental assumptions on which their giving is based. It approaches controversial topics from power dynamics to grants payout in an accessible way, offering next generation readers the tools they need to transform their funds. While written specifically for young philanthropists, this guide is also an essential reference for all those who work with wealthy families and research the field, including financial managers, philanthropic advisors, and non-profit fundraisers. Many of the 40,000+ family funds and their advisors are seeking strategies to involve young people in giving. Creating Change Through Family Philanthropy provides several resources to begin. Alison Goldberg joined Resource Generation's staff after the organization she created and directed, Foundations for Change, merged with RG. She has worked for a number of non-profits and within her own family's foundation to promote social and economic justice. She lives in the Boston area. Karen Pittelman is the author of Resource Generation's Classified: How to Stop Hiding Your Privilege and Use It For Social Change from Soft Skull Press and served as RG's first program coordinator. At 25 she dissolved her $3 million trust fund to co-found the Chahara Foundation, a fund run by and for low-income women activists in Boston. She lives in New York City. Resource Generation is a national non-profit organization that works with young people with financial wealth who believe in social change.
