EWT Joint is designed to resist water penetration into a seam/crack. But a crack must be filled prior to “overbanding”.

Contractors on jobs where there is minimal cracking will cut Joint into strips and melt it into the crack before overbanding. Sand is ok but a bit unstable.
It can be enhanced by mixing sand with a sealcoating emulsion and making it a paste and troweling it into the cracks.
