Wood screws have deep coarse threads and are specifically designed for use in wood projects. The shank of the wood screw allows the screw to spin freely inside of the outermost piece of wood and draw the inner piece tight against it by having the threaded end grip the wood and pull. Flat heads are countersunk with a cone shaped bearing surface and a flat top that is used in applications where the head of the fastener must sit flush with the mating surface. Phillips drive is a cross head design and is the most commonly used type in America. Phillips is often criticized for its tendency to cam out at lower torque levels but this was actually a deliberate feature of the design, for the purpose of assembling aluminum aircraft without overtightening the fasteners.
