Why Are Tallits Traditionally Made Of Wool?

Wool tallits have been almost universally preferred over cotton,
silk and synthetic materials for centuries (or perhaps millenia).
According to halacha wool is clearly the preferred material.
It looks much nicer than the inexpensive synthetic type ("Acrylan"),
is very durable,
hangs nicely and breathes well.
Some people assume a wool tallit feels hot,
but keep in mind that a lightweight or medium weight tallit worn loosely will not heat
you up more than silk or cotton.
Also, wool tallits are rarely itchy
