It is mainly used to gauge the thickness of wet film on the painted surface, and can estimate the proximate thickness when it is dry. It can be used in both laboratory and production controlling. Used for checking the thickness coating of wet paint, enamel lacquer, adhensive, architectural coating,color coating, varnish, chemical industry, or other coating that has been applied to a smooth surface. 1. Apply the coating on a flat plate (rigid substrate) with appropriate hardness. The area of the test plate must be large enough so that the distance between the place where the film thickness is measured and either side of the test plate is at least 25 mm. Measure the wet film thickness immediately after application.
2.Fix the test plate on a suitable horizontal basis, so that the test plate will not move or jump in the process of measuring paint film. Place the instrument on the wet film with thickness to be measured, so that its minimum reading is at the top, and the maximum gap between the eccentric wheel of the instrument and the wet film is just above the wet film. Then roll it forward for half a circle (180 degrees) and move it after repeatedly rolling for half a circle (180 degrees) in the opposite direction. Check the contact position between the central rim of the instrument and the surface of the wet film, read the reading and calculate its average value to become a reading.
3. If the topcoat contains fast volatile solvent or its solid content is low, then at least one additional separate reading shall be taken on the newly coated film and the average value of these separate readings shall be calculated.
Note: Although this instrument is suitable for measuring the thickness of wet film coated on flat test plates, it can also be used on the spot or in factories for the surface of workpieces bent in only one direction, as long as the substrate is not bent between two concentric wheels so as to affect the measurement of the instrument.
