Today we are single mode travelers, commuting alone in our cars. But as urban populations increase, the geometry of cars no longer works in cities. The traffic and pollution keep getting worse. There is not enough room for everyone to drive. We need a new mobility system for the next century. The New Mobility Handbook is an introduction to the urbanist policies and new mobility solutions we need to reduce our dependence on cars. No single mode or policy will be enough. We will not all ride a bus or a scooter. The future must be multimodal, so we can choose the right mode for each trip. To get there, we need to make all modes more attractive through fair pricing and infrastructure changes. This means cities must embrace new mobility solutions like ride-hail, autonomy and micromobility. And also keep traffic flowing with policies like road pricing, reduced parking, protected micromobility lanes and transit priority.Micromobility, ride-hail, and public transit can work together to reduce personal car use and encourage multimodal travel. New mobility modes are incredibly popular and can finally get Americans out of personal cars. But the externalities of ride-hail, autonomy and micromobility will need to be managed with policies like road pricing and reduced parking, and with infrastructure like protected micromobility lanes and improved transit priority. When we make room on our streets for other modes, and price all modes fairly, we can choose the right tool for the job for each trip and rethink how we get around cities.
