Summer on the coast of Maine is often short, 3 months, sometimes even less, and when the trees, plants and flowers bloom, they’re in a rush to get their business done in the short amount of time available. The result is a profusion of flowering and blooming, a glorious hunger for life, beauty and reproduction. The folks who live on the coast of Maine are seldom inclined to hire other people to take care of their gardens. Working in the garden is seen as part of the joy of having a garden as well as being beneficial to one’s health and well-being. Martha Reed Coles, the person who designed this particular garden, died about 15 years ago, back in 2006. But her garden lives on, in almost the exact manner in which she laid it out, every summer rushing back to life, sprouting, blooming, attracting bees and birds, creating seeds and new life.
