Word for Today: Lectionary Year B

This book is a table of readings from Scripture appointed to be read at public worship. This was originally developed by the Roman Catholic Church after Vatican II (1969, revised 1981) to provide for a three-year cycle of Sunday readings. That Roman lectionary then provided the basis for this Revised Common Lectionary, an ecumenical project by many other American Christian denominations out of a concern for the unity of the church and a desire for a common experience of Scripture. The Revised Common Lectionary, published in 1992, is a three-year cycle of Sunday Eucharistic readings in which Matthew, Mark, and Luke are read in successive years with some material from John read in each year. Secondly, we provide a full set of Eucharistic prayers for each Sunday and feast day. This includes the historic First Prayer, or Collect, which was prepared by the Western Christian Church during the fifth through seventh century. These are here as ordered since the twelfth century, and as was used in all the Christian churches till Vatican II. We freshly translated the Latin originals in the early 1980s, and these have since then been constantly reviewed and refined. The Offertory and Post Communion Prayers were composed in subsequent years, and also been regularly refined since then. They are our effort of poetic prose with the intention of teaching the broad range of stewardship and Eucharistic theology. They are restrained and concise according to the oldest western catholic tradition.
