About this item

The Saintly Triad: The Lives of St. Patrick, St. Columbkille, and St. Bridget

"The Saintly Triad" explores the lives and legacies of three of Ireland's patron saints: St. Patrick, St. Bridget, and St. Columba. The book delves into their histories, examining their roles as religious figures, cultural icons, and national symbols. It also looks at the ways in which their stories have been mythologized and distorted over time, separating fact from fiction and uncovering the true nature of their contributions to Irish culture and spirituality. Through vivid storytelling and historical analysis, "The Saintly Triad" sheds new light on the lives and accomplishments of these three saints, revealing them as complex, multifaceted individuals who were deeply committed to their faith and their communities. The book also explores the ways in which their legacies continue to shape Irish identity and culture today, making it a must-read for anyone interested in Irish history, spirituality, or culture. About The Author Father John Colgan was a notable Irish Franciscan scholar and hagiographer who lived from 1592 to 1658. He was born in County Donegal, Ireland and entered the Franciscan order at a young age. Colgan is best known for his extensive research on Irish saints and his work in preserving and promoting Irish culture and history during a period of intense English colonialism in Ireland. Colgan's most famous work is "Acta Sanctorum Hiberniae" ("The Acts of the Irish Saints"), a seven-volume collection of biographies of Irish saints. He also contributed to other hagiographical works, including "Trias Thaumaturga", which includes the lives of Saint Patrick, Saint Bridget, and Saint Columba (also known as Columbkille), the three saints featured in "The Saintly Triad" book. Colgan's scholarly work was highly regarded during his lifetime and continues to be an important resource for scholars and historians interested in Irish history, literature, and hagiography. Lives of the Saints St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and is celebrated on March 17th every year. He was born in Britain in the late 4th century and was kidnapped by Irish raiders when he was a teenager. He spent six years as a slave in Ireland before escaping and eventually returning to Ireland as a Christian missionary. He is credited with spreading Christianity throughout the country and is also known for driving snakes out of Ireland, although this is likely a myth. St. Patrick died on March 17th, 461 AD, and is remembered as one of Ireland's most important religious figures. St. Bridget , also known as St. Brigid of Kildare, is one of Ireland's patron saints. She was born in the 5th century and is believed to have founded several monasteries throughout Ireland. She was known for her piety, her generosity, and her compassion for the poor and sick. Legend has it that she turned water into beer, and she is also credited with making the cross of rushes, which has become a symbol of Irish Christianity. St. Bridget died on February 1st, and her feast day is celebrated on that date. She is remembered as a symbol of Irish culture and the importance of charity and service to others. St. Columba, also known as St. Columbkille , was an Irish monk and missionary who lived in the 6th century. He is known for his contributions to Christianity in Scotland and for founding the monastery of Iona, which became one of the most important religious centers in Europe. St. Columba was also a prolific writer and is credited with writing over 300 books, including illuminated manuscripts and translations of the Bible. He is remembered as a great scholar and a champion of the Irish language and culture. St. Columba died on June 9th, 597 AD, and is celebrated as one of Ireland's patron saints.
