About this item

History of the Nineteenth Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry 1861-1865

Follow the soldiers of the 19th Massachusetts Infantry from their organization in August 1861, all the way through to the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House in and the Grand Review of the Army of the Potomac in Washington, DC, in 1865. This regiment included the Boston Tiger Fire Zouaves of Company K (who wore their unique zouave uniform up to, and during, the Battle of Gettysburg) and former Salem Zouaves who were hand-chosen to drill the companies to the epitome of excellence. The regiment was also led and trained by Elmer Ellsworth's former business partner and friend Lt. Colonel Arthur Devereux, former commander of the Salem Zouaves, and received the nickname the "Nineteenth Regulars" from the other volunteer regiments in their brigade. The hard-fighting Bay-State soldiers were heavily engaged during the Seven Days' Campaign, Antietam, Gettysburg, and more. At the Battle of Fredericksburg, they, alongside their comrades of the 7th Michigan Infantry, were chosen as a "forlorn hope" to assault the Confederate-held city by rowing pontoon boats across the river all while under heavy musket and artillery fire. With over 100 added photos, engravings, illustrations, and a complete muster roll, this new reprint of the 1906 original is part of the Civil War Zouave Regimental Series.
