An Anthology of Chicana and Chicano Voices

We are a collective of Chicana and Chicano writers committed to sharing our stories, poems, experiences, and perspectives. We write because we love to read, but we struggled in our childhood to find books with characters who looked like us and had similar aspirations and dreams. We were hungry to find our place in the world, but there were few books that spoke to us about where we wanted to go and what we wanted to be when we grew up. Our goals are to share our Chicana and Chicano perspectives so that others can get to know us, to see ourselves as writers because of the dearth of stories about the Chicana and Chicano experience, and to embrace that we have stories worth telling. We also believe that writing is a political act, and when we record our lives, struggles, and achievements in a story, essay, or poem, we become political writers. We cannot avoid being political because if we are silent, our silence becomes a political statement. We tell our stories, because if we don’t, then perhaps they won’t be told and our narratives won’t be available to break the chains of ignorance, intolerance, and hate.
