Original Book! Neurodivergent individuals want to participate in society, and we must understand that their brains are wired somewhat differently . Some of our students or new hires to a job position require a different strategy or methodology to help them earn their license or job position, not just Driver's Education. Whether you’re a business owner or manager who regularly hires and trains new employees, the methods outlined here are just as applicable in many training and educational settings. The Road to Greater Independence for the Neurodiverse is a resource for parents, students, driving instructors, and driving schools to better understand the needs of the ASD, ADHD, and learning-challenged populations in teaching them how to drive and gaining greater independence in their lives. Ron is a Certified Driving Instructor in multiple US states who is also a Driver Rehabilitation Specialist and Certified Cognitive Coach, drawing on thousands of hours of behind-the-wheel experience and a love of working with a wide variety of neurodiverse students. The Road to Greater Independence for the Neurodiverse is a guide for everyone involved through the driver's education process, as well as for the owner/manager/supervisor who trains and manages employees who may present as neurodivergent. Throughout the pages, the reader will find pertinent information as well as personal teaching and instruction stories involving real students. Readers will also be exposed to examples of what to do and not do, holding to a philosophy of using an individualized methodology of instruction rather than a "one size fits all" model typically found in driver's education. The Road to Greater Independence for the Neurodiverse would like to see everyone who is able to drive do so, and yet we are realistic in that this may not be the best course of action for the neurodiverse student and their respective family. Operating a motor vehicle may not be a realistic option, and questions should be asked and evaluations performed before embarking on this endeavor; therefore, the four potential "Exit Ramps" for all students. Empathy, professionalism, concern for the individual student, and honesty should always be employed as best practices in any form of education.
