I sat in the last night’s cell in a state of calm that’s almost indescribable. I’d consumed my last meal, made my last calls, and said my goodbyes. There was nothing left to do but wait. I was 80 minutes away from the lethal injection. Over the intercom an announcement was made: “The special event for the evening has been canceled”. My execution was that special event, and it was no longer taking place. Immediately all my emotions, sense of self, and the storm that comes with those feelings returned to me, along with my normal state of consciousness. Where did the feelings of peace and freedom go? I’d just experienced them; I know they exist. As the realization set in that I would not be executed, but instead would return to my cell, my mind began processing everything that just happened. How do I return to the place of peace and calm? How do I experience the tranquility I felt only moments before? What do I need to do so I can experience it again? This book documents the answers I found, and the paths I traveled while on my journey to find peace.
