About this item

A Greek Temple in French Prairie: The William Case House of 1858–59 in French Prairie Oregon

In 1858-59 William Case, an early settler in Oregon’s French Prairie, built a new house for his family. In his childhood he had seen Indiana’s new state capitol, modeled on the Athenian Parthenon; he wanted his house, too, to evoke a Greek temple. Yet what Case built was quite a different thing, and more interesting for being so. A hundred and twenty years later it was restored by a couple who then lived their own lives in it and surrounded it with a splendid garden of their design. Through plans, drawings, and photographs made especially for this book, A Greek Temple in French Prairie traces the story of this remarkable house.
