Soccer Mexicana: following the ball, finding Mexico

Unexpectedly moving to the hypermetropolis of Mexico City, without having had a basic course in Spanish was daunting. Becoming a stay-at-home dad for the first time in a machismo society was more so. I needed an outlet. When everyone around you speaks a language you don't understand, your brain reaches for the nearest relatable thing. That was soccer. Translating basics just to find a team to follow turned into a deep love for Mexican football, learning culture and country through the lens of the game. At a compelling time in Mexican soccer, I traveled through Mexico for games, experienced local fan culture, ate plenty of street food, and stumbled on an audience eager for the musings of an outsider immersed in fútbol Mexicano.
