In the early nineteenth century Solomon Rose starts appearing in the records of Oneida County, New York, raising several questions about his origin. Where exactly was he born? And who were his parents? This genealogy is an attempt to answer those and many other questions through a meticulous study of the available evidence, including censuses, deeds, probate documents, tax lists, private family records, and genetic tests. All this evidence strongly indicates that Solomon belonged to the Rose family of Greenwich, Washington County, and Hoosick, Rensselaer County, New York, and was ultimately descended from Tormut Rose of New Shoreham, Rhode Island. Tormut was a Scotsman and the progenitor of a large family in America. He is widely thought to have been captured as a prisoner of war after the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 and subsequently sold by the English government into indentured servitude in New England. In a show of remarkable perseverance, by 1661 Tormut appears to have gained his freedom, settling in New Shoreham, also known as Block Island, where he lived to have several children. The book begins by studying at length the first four generations of New Shoreham’s Roses, starting with Tormut. By the fifth generation, it shifts its attention to the Roses of Greenwich and Hoosick, a family that had gone virtually unresearched prior to this book’s publication. Other last names investigated in the book include Bentley, Billington, Foster, Gage, Hamilton, Hancock/Hancox, Kenyon, Luther, Pender/Pinder/Pindar, Potter, Reynolds, Robison, Rock, Rogers, Ross, Smith, Watson, and Wescott/Westcott.
