Incident at Cold Creek: A Tale of the Civil War

Following the battle of Gettysburg in the War Between the States, the Brewers, along with other mountain families, were overrun by bloodthirsty bushwackers and deserters of both armies. Cheer on the Brewer family and the Poteat family as they defend the small village of Three Forks, and fight for their lives. The rebel yells of the men in tattered coats of gray echo so loudly through the mountains that it almost drowns out the sound of cannon batteries firing, and the screams of the wounded and their last gasps of dying breath. As you read, you will feel the fear caused by the hundreds of mini balls filling the air at the Linville Caverns, and you’ll almost hear the horses of the cavalry running through the fights around the Dry Ponds area of Burke County, North Carolina. Incident at Cold Creek is written as historical fiction of the Brewer Family’s trials and triumphs during the War, and uses the mountain cultural dialect of the time period.
