Preserving India’s musical heritage means balancing respect for tradition with thoughtful documentation. This is especially important in India, where music has mostly been passed down orally through the guru-shishya system. While this teaching style creates deep, personal learning, it also makes the tradition vulnerable to being lost without written records. Saving old bandishes is not just about archiving—it’s about keeping the voices of past generations alive for today and tomorrow. Saṅgīt Manjarī is an important step in that direction. Compiled by Pt. Ramprasanna Bandyopadhyay of the Bishnupur Gharānā and first published in 1907, it is one of the earliest attempts to record a gharānā’s music in written form. The book draws from his training under his father, Pt. Anantalal Bandyopadhyay, and the wider Bishnupur tradition. The collection is notable for its variety. While Dhrupad is central to the work, it also includes Khayāl, Tappā, Thumri, Chaturang, Jhulan, Trivat, and Thillānā. This makes Saṅgīt Manjarī more than a record of one tradition—it’s a rare and rich glimpse into many styles of North Indian classical music. Very few books from that time offer such a wide-ranging view. Around 1935, Ramprasanna’s younger brother, Pt. Gopeswar Bandyopadhyay, edited and expanded the original work. His version helped establish Saṅgīt Manjarī as a reliable and valuable resource for students and scholars of Indian classical music. Despite its value, the book is hard to access. While scanned versions are available online, the compositions are in Braj Bhasha written using Bengali script. This makes it difficult for most modern readers to use, unless they know both the language and the script. Our project makes Saṅgīt Manjarī easier to access. We kept the original Braj language but changed the script to Roman (English letters) so more people can read it. We also fixed several small spelling and wording issues to stay close to how the music was originally sung and taught. In addition, we rewrote the music using the Bhatkhande notation system, which is widely used today to write Indian classical music. We didn’t want to simply copy the original book—we wanted to make it usable for musicians and readers today. Our version stays true to the spirit of the original while making it easier to study and perform. This project was inspired by my teacher, Pt. Arijit Mahalanabis. While I was a doctoral student at Penn State, our music lessons often led to discussions about rare compositions, including many from Saṅgīt Manjarī. His deep knowledge and earlier work on reviving forgotten musical texts helped shape how we approached this edition. Because the full Saṅgīt Manjarī is large, we are releasing it in parts. This first volume focuses on compositions that influenced Rabindranath Tagore. The Bishnupur Gharānā had a clear impact on Tagore’s musical ideas, and by highlighting this link, we aim to show how classical traditions shaped modern Bengali music. More broadly, we hope this work contributes to the larger conversation about preserving India’s music traditions. By combining careful editing with digital tools, we aim to build a model for reviving and sharing old musical texts. We hope others working with different gharānās will be inspired to do the same.
