Joel’s introduction into his world of addiction and downward spiral from having loving parents and a life beginning as the average everyday son like any other son in Singapore where he was born and lived; yet falling into addiction. It is told graphically and honestly with a depth of understanding and perception of one ending up in full blown addiction. This led to not just living high but living low in selfishness, pride, manipulation and having played the blame game as if to be prized for what ends he sought to achieve. I would hope any drug user would read this book as it ultimately is about life change and transformation by the power of God. Joel’s writes more about his new life then the old but the contrast between the new and the old is worthy of reading his entire story. The “Son” part of Joel’s new life takes the reader deep into his life transformation and how God can take the worse (i.e. Scum) and do an extreme makeover of those that surrender to Jesus Christ.In his changed life he had significant mentors that contributed to his spiritual and emotional growth. In addition, it’s how God can use anyone to become useful in helping reach back to where he came from, and to those that now are like he once was; to be an example of what they too can become like Joel’s story. If you have a loved one on drugs or addicted to alcohol, I strongly recommend this book. It is both a story of darkness to light, hopelessness to hope and it is a workbook for anyone who needs to work through the process of discipleship in Christ.
