A gritty and emotionally harrowing story that captures the human cost of the Pacific Theater during WWII. Seventeen-year-old Danny Hale lives a quiet life in Charleston, South Carolina, with his mother and younger sister Marybeth in 1944. Naive and full of optimism, Danny dreams of avenging his older brother who died in Guadalcanal—ending in glory and heroism. His best friend, Caleb, asks him if he plans to enlist, and Danny confidently replies that he will, imagining himself as a brave Marine. Encouraged by patriotic fervor and youthful fearlessness, Danny leaves home, believing he will return a man. Danny arrives at Camp Pendleton, where he meets a group of fellow recruits who share the same eager, innocent enthusiasm. Among them are Tom Keller, Luke Taylor, Ox Elsher, Ortiz Garcia, and Russo Hart. They quickly become close friends during the grueling 16 weeks of training. Drill Instructor Sullivan, a battle-hardened Marine, repeatedly warns them that war is not glory but survival—a message Danny quietly ignores. Together, the squad learns to dig foxholes, throw grenades, read maps, practice squad maneuvers, and finally master the M1 Garand rifle. Despite the exhaustion, the boys joke, bond, and believe they are ready for anything. After training, Danny and his friends board a transport ship for their first combat operation: Peleliu. Initially, their bravado masks their fear, but once the amtrac ramps drop on the beach, hell begins. Machine-gun fire and artillery tear the Marines apart as they wade through sand and chaos. Danny experiences his first true horror—seeing mangled bodies and hearing screams—before narrowly escaping death. During the brutal beach landing, countless marines are killed in front of them, leaving the group shaken and Danny’s illusions of heroism shattered. After weeks of carnage, Danny and the members of his squad return to Pavuvu, where the Marines begin preparing for their next operation: Okinawa—their bloodiest battle.
