To be in love with each other is without question a positive and some may say even necessary ingredient for surviving a cross-cultural relationship. But when I set out on my journey, I didn't want to just survive. I wanted to live life, be happy, and progress in my relationship and in my life. I figured it would be good to know ahead of time what situations would arise and how I should deal with them, but I never found a "How To..." book of tips and guidelines, although I eventually learned some of those tidbits thanks to my own experiences. What I came to regard as more important than those nuggets about special situations, was that I had to find a way to become super-resilient in both mind and spirit. The challenges presented were sometimes too much for me to handle as effectively as I wanted. It may have been the most difficult path I ever set out on. My partner also wanted more than just to survive so we worked on it together. This book is about lessons I learned along the way. Progressing from simply surviving to actually enjoying the benefits of our life together did not happen overnight. “Our Cross-Cultural Relationship” is a memoir of very short stories about everything from the very difficult and time-consuming to a few of our more light-hearted moments. The bond that developed between us was owed in large part to our experiences and cultures. But in addition to solving problems with the traits and philosophies we knew and shared even before we met, we paid close attention to our differences, consistently leaving the door open with enough room for a little understanding to get through and help us turn many of our differences into shared strengths.
