About this item

The Oxford Book of Wedding Music for Manuals

The definitive collection of 27 of the most popular classics of the wedding repertoire in simplified arrangements for manuals only. All the best-loved processionals, marches, and more reflective pieces are included. ' ... reflects the high standard we have come to expect from [Oxford University Press]. The covers are attractively designed and the books delightful to handle, demanding a performance of any of their contents worthy of their own material quality - a noble attainment when some may be tempted to say 'Anything will do!' Laudate`No Widor here, but just about everything else you could wish for, all musically and skilfully arranged by Malcolm Archer . . . more capable players having occasionally to play a manuals-only wedding (or even one on a piano or electronic keyboard!) will prefer this OUP volume.' Organists' Review`Oxford University Press would not venture into the congested area of popular organ music without good reason... Taking stock of what's already congesting this area, OUP obviously decided to weed out textures more thoroughly without turning pieces into sickly relics... The book's 27 pieces offer plenty of variety, and cover the range of what might be termed `simple'. In any case, the user ultimately plays what technique allows. May heaven preserve us from those who publicly ignore that precaution.' Choir and Organ`The collection comprises the best-loved and most often asked for organ music. For the keyboard player who is a reluctant organist the collection is a gem. For the young organist who wants material for technical playing with a purpose, this book is for you too... It will be a valuable companion in an organist's library.' Musical Opinion Malcolm Archer was educated at King Edward VII School, Lytham, the Royal College of Music, and Jesus College, Cambridge, where he was organ scholar. He studied the organ with Ralph Downes, Gillian Weir and Nicolas Kynaston, and composition with Herbert Sumsion and Alan Ridout. He is a prolific composer with well over 200 published works, which receive regular performances on BBC radio and TV. Archer was formerly Organist and Director of Music at St Paul's Cathedral and is now Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College.
