This book represents a selection of papers presented by academics and researchers at the 12th Conference on British and American Studies. They are grouped in two main theme clusters, corresponding to the two chapters of the book: Languages in Contact and Languages in Use and Multidisciplinarity and Multiculturalism in Literary Studies. In the first section, language is described, in turn, as subject to influence by other language systems, as an object of learning and acquisition, and as an instrument enabling users to bridge between cultures, disciplinary domains, and people. The second part of the volume is mainly concerned with such notions as hybridity, tolerance, identity, subversion and deconstruction, as reflected in classical and contemporary Anglo-American literary texts. Marinela Burada is Associate Professor at Transilvania University of Braov, Romania, where she teaches courses in Linguistics, English Morphosyntax, Academic Literacy, and Lexicography. She has conducted research in fields such as contact linguistics, lexicography, and contrastive rhetoric. She has published a number of articles and books, including a monographic study on the role of Latin in the historical development of English (in Romanian) and Rhetorical Features in Student Persuasive Writing, an exploration of the specificities of academic composition in keeping with the ecology of writing. Oana Tatu is Associate Professor at Transilvania University of Braov, Romania, and has a PhD in Linguistics. Her research and professional interests fall within the scope of literary translation, applied linguistics, and Renaissance English literature, and have materialised in several publications in these fields, including Translating Shakespeare: The Challenge of the Romanian Language. She has also co-organized the Conference on British and American Studies, an academic forum hosted by Transilvania University of Braov, Romania, since 2011. Raluca Sinu is Senior Lecturer at Transilvania University of Braov, Romania. She holds a PhD in Linguistics, and is the author and co-author of articles and books in fields such as audiovisual translation, applied linguistics, and lexicography. Her book Humour in Film Subtitling represents an investigation into the strategies Romanian translators employ in dealing with linguistic and extralinguistic humour. Since 2011, she has also co-organized the Conference on British and American Studies.
