Throughout history Mary Magdalene has always been a controversial figure. She has been conflated with numerous other Marys in the New Testament. She has been thought of as a prostitute, as perpetuated by Pope Gregory in the year 591 CE. She was a follower of Jesus and thought to be a woman of means who financed Jesus’s ministry. Who was Mary Magdalene and what was her actual relationship to Jesus the Christ? What evidence do we have? With no marriage certificates to track down it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. There is not one source where a definitive answer, lock, stock, and barrel is to be attained, but we can look to the biblical records, sacred texts, historical records, sociology, and customs of the times to assemble what can be the most probable conclusion which takes into account all the pieces of information.
