Mason (1865-1948) was a British novelist, poet, and playwright who wrote during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for his historical adventure novel The Four Feathers , which was adapted into several films. Mason was born Alfred Edward Woodley Mason in London in 1865. He was educated at Marlborough College and University College London, where he studied law and was called to the Bar in 1888. Mason began his literary career writing poetry, with his first collection, Musings in London and Elsewhere, published in 1893. He began writing prose shortly afterward and his first novel, A Romance of Wastdale, was published in 1895. His most famous work, The Four Feathers , was published in 1902 and was an immediate success, selling over a million copies. It was adapted into several films between 1939 and 2002, with the latest film adaptation starring Heath Ledger. Mason wrote several other books, including The Courts of the Morning , The House of the Arrow , and The Witness for the Defense , which was adapted into a film starring Laurence Olivier. Mason was a member of the Royal Literary Fund and received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Durham in 1908. He died in 1948 in Winchelsea, East Sussex, England.
