Bob White’s body was shipped home in a flag draped casket. As were 58,000 plus of his brothers in arms. Every one of them with a unique story untold, of heroism, torment, and grief. Over sixty years have passed. The scholars, military analysts, historians, all put forth their explanations of the reason for it all. But the only real answer is our country went insane. There is no valid explanation as to why. Deceit, treachery, double-dealing, lies, political self-aggrandizement, the Military Industrial Complex, and misinformation all played a part. But when you were down in the trenches with bullets cracking over your head, none of those explanations mean shit. Ask any Vietnam Vet. It was a long insane tour of confusion and just making it through one more night, just coming back from one more patrol, just another company ceremony for the fallen to get through, was the goal. And one more ghost was added to your already crowded nightmares. The smell of death, burning shit, rotting flesh, gnats the size of humming birds, leaches, two step snakes, dust-offs, and the screams of the wounded on both sides remain and will never leave our tortured minds. Sixty years and we still can’t make sense of it. It is shit like that, that follows you for the rest of your life…maybe Bob was the lucky one.
