Growing up in the foster care system with no record of his birth or tangible memories of a family, thirteen-year-old Will has little hope of ever learning where he came from. Resolving to put his unknown past behind him, he focuses on the hope of finding a new, permanent family, despite the strange occurrences that seem to follow him. Meanwhile, on the distant, magical world of Dellian, Lissa, an only child with her widowed father constantly occupied by his exalted position within his majesty’s government, struggles to fit in and make friends. Shortly after her thirteenth birthday, Lissa gives up on finding a kindred spirit among her egocentric peers, instead looking to befriend her new servant girl, Corrinthia, from the exotic country of Elster across the great desert. The two girls find more adventure than they expected when Lissa’s father is arrested and, in search of the truth, they encounter a mysterious plot involving a portal to a distant world. After a boy from this strange world helps them escape certain death, he becomes stranded with them in Dellian. Lissa, Corrie, and Will are now alone and pursued by an unknown foe. Can the three of them uncover the plot and clear Lissa’s father, all while avoiding capture and getting Will home?
